Radboudumc and UMC Utrecht are investigating whether healthcare workers are better protected against the corona virus after a vaccination against tuberculosis (BCG vaccine).
More protection?
Previous research shows that such a boost of the immune system with BCG provides more protection against flu, but it is not known whether this also applies to other infections such as corona. “That is precisely the reason for this research,” says Mihai Netea, professor of experimental internal medicine at Radboudumc. “During this epidemic, if fewer people in the BCG-vaccinated group drop out due to illness, that's an encouraging result.
